Management of Greenhouse Gases Emission

The National Organizing Committee has conducted a pre-conference inventory (ex ante) on Rio+20 greenhouse gases emissions (GHGs). The preparation of this inventory was based on the Brazilian official position in international negotiations on climate change, following scientifically robust standards and internationally recognized methodologies, respecting national characteristics. This work will be complemented by a post evaluation, to be conducted after the event (ex post estimate).

The two inventories include the consumption of electricity and fuels used in the official Conference sites and in the official vehicles. Waste disposal and air travel of accredited delegates and the United Nations Secretariat will also be assessed.

Emission of Greenhouse Gases will be offset by Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) generated from Brazilian projects under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and donated by Brazilian companies.

The National Organizing Committee has already the amount needed of carbon credits to offset the emissions associated with the Conference organization.

In order to facilitate the offsetting of emissions from air travel of accredited delegates, the Brazilian Government created, in partnership with Caixa Economica Federal and UNDP Brazil, a digital tool that will enable participants to calculate their GHG emission from air travel and purchase Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) for offset.

The Brazilian Government encourages all participants to voluntarily offset their emissions from air transport using CERs from CDM projects in Brazil.
