Energy
Brazil is one of the countries with the largest participation of renewable sources in its energy matrix. In line with this commitment to sustainable development, the National Organizing Committee for Rio+20 sought solutions focused on sustainability for the energy needs of the Conference as well. The adopted strategy is aimed at both the supply and consumption. For supply, the generators for the event will use B20, diesel fuel containing 20% biodiesel.
The use of renewable fuel will represent a reduction in consumption of 280 thousand liters of fossil diesel, enough to run a bus for over 800 thousand kilometers, distance equivalent to driving to the moon and back. The use of efficient equipment, on the consumption side, also represents significant action. In the temporary areas, built specifically for the Rio+20 event, equipment certified by the Brazilian Labeling Program (PBE) in the most efficient categories, such as air conditioners, LED lights and latest generation of fluorescent lights.
The reduction in consumption is estimated to reach 38 MWh, which equals the average energy consumption of 700 homes for the period of the Conference. The National Organizing Committee guides its chain of suppliers and managers of the official spaces to use energy in the most efficient way, whether electric or fuel-based. The Committee will also monitor services to guarantee the meeting of specifications for the use of energy efficient equipment.
