What Brazil expects from the Conference
Brazil expects the results of Rio+20 to include:
• The definitive incorporation of poverty eradication as an essential element to achieving sustainable development;
• The full consideration of the concept of sustainable development in decision-making by actors of the economic, social and environmental pillars, in order to overcome the persistence of sectoral visions twenty years after the definition of sustainable development as a global priority;
• The strengthening of multilateralism with the clear message of adjustment of the structures of the United Nations and other international institutions to the challenge of sustainable development; and
• The recognition of the international reorganization underway, with its reflections on global governance.
The balance between the three pillars of sustainable development could be strengthened during the Conference for example through the establishment of Sustainable Development Goals - which would determine the areas where national efforts and international cooperation should be focused with a view to promoting sustainable development - as well as through the definition of an international governance framework to ensure that the concept of sustainable development is properly regarded as a paradigm by all specialized organizations and agencies of the United Nations system.
