More City Project

CNO Rio+20
Integrated Urban Governance Program helped to involve the community in actions coordinated by the city.

Lauro de Freitas, a municipality located at the entrance to Salvador, has the second largest population density in the state of Bahia.

However, unplanned growth created several structural problems and intensified social contrasts. The City Hall, alone, seemed unable to reverse this situation. Change only came about with the Integrated Urban Governance Program. The community gradually became involved and governmental actions acquired transparency, social justice and trust.

Soon, participative culture conquered Lauro de  Freitas. Coordinated by the City Hall, the population organized itself into management groups, associations, clubs and cooperatives of various types. The city is now quite different. From cultural policies to the generation of income – who could tell –, every decision is commonly agreed on.
