In a squatter settlement of the Federal District, there was a community
living in situation of extreme poverty, stricken with hunger, violence and the
lack of work. They made their living from the waste and from eventual
charitable initiatives. Inspired by a lecture for waste pickers, they decided
to unite their forces and took a step beyond that situation. The Cooperative of
Recyclable Materials – Reciclo – came then into existence. Together, the
pickers defined their goals and convinced several institutions and companies
about the capacity of the project.
