A community of 600 families settled on the riparian areas of a
mangrove land in the neighborhood of Coroa do Meio, a lofty section of
the city of Aracaju,
capital of the state of Sergipe. Concerns such as the ecology, respect
to the
environment and public policies aimed at the improvement of life quality
were
far from being taken into consideration. The situation started to change
in
2002, when the City Hall created Habitar
Brasil, a program that coupled social work and a policy of land
legalization. Now the inhabitants of Coroa do Meio are proud to tell where they
live and the families are living in harmony with nature.
