In Mocinha Magalhães, a community of
the city of Rio Branco/AC, hundreds of families were living in a Permanent Protection
Area (APP) without land entitlements or decent housing conditions. There was
neither an ecological consciousness, nor policies aimed at improving the
quality of life. The process of change started through an initiative of the
City Hall, in the promotion of integrated work alongside the community. The
neighborhood has been urbanized, with the construction of new houses, sanitation,
bathrooms, a community center, a health assistance center and leisure spaces. The
river streams have been reforested. Actions have been undertaken in terms of
capacity building, employment and income. Criminality rates have decreased
while school enrollment has increased.
