Values Found in the Waste Project

CNO Rio+20
Project disseminates proper waste handling

Environmental Sustainability in GoianáThe municipality of Goianá, in the state of Minas Gerais, was not treating its waste adequately. Tons of residues were dumped every month in open dumping sites at the urban perimeter without proper ecological management, generating health risks to local communities. The Solid Urban Residue Management Program (Programa de Gerenciamento de Resíduos Sólidos Urbanos,  PGRSU) and the Waste Selection and Composting Plant (Usina de Triagem e Compostagem de Lixo, UTCL) raised awareness of the population.

In an integrated manner, the Secretariat of Education started courses in capacity building aimed at young people, involving students and teachers in continuous mobilization to disseminate proper waste handling, an initiative which achieved 100% success in the community. A trend of environmental problems and diseases has been reversed to improve quality of life, employment and income.
