Citizen Picker
Solidary Selective Collection of public waste rescues identity and the citizenship of street pickers.
The
City Hall of Mesquita has radically transformed the
relation of the municipality with its excluded groups, who had been victimized
by prejudice as they made their living out of the public waste, deprived of the
minimally decent conditions: the street pickers. The upturn started with the
creation of the ‘Solidary Selective Collection’ initiative, a public policy
that has involved schools and communities, institutionalizing the integrated
management of solid waste, rescuing the identity and the citizenship of the
street pickers.
