Solid Waste Management
The Solid Waste Management Plan of Rio +20 is based on the recent National Policy on Solid Waste (Law 12.305/10). The National Organizing Committee (CNO) sought to establish a management model that consolidates the hierarchy of non-generation, reduction, reuse, recycling, treatment and final disposal of solid waste.
One of the pillars of Rio+20 selective collection is the performance of recycling cooperatives through participatory mechanism that benefits the largest possible number of them. Part of this group will also be distributed by the official spaces to serve as environmental educators, to guide and educate participants about the proposed system of selective collection, which will be divided into four basic streams: recyclable, non-recyclable, compostables, batteries and mobile phones.
The destinations of the waste will be conducted as follows:
- The recyclable waste will be allocated to Waste Picker Cooperatives;
- The non-recyclable waste will be disposed in landfill;
- The organic waste will be sent to the production of fertilizer;
- The batteries and mobile phones will have their components recycled.
The correct signaling system is one of the main factors which contribute to a proper selective collection. The signs of the collectors will be in Portuguese, English and Braille, whenever possible.
