Services
Business hours
In Rio de Janeiro, street shops open from 9am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. On Saturdays, shops usually remain open until 1pm, but in some tourist areas they may stay open during the afternoon. At shopping malls, stores open from 10am to 10pm, Monday to Saturday, and from 2pm or 3pm to 10pm, on Sundays.
Post Office
Brazilian postal services meet all international standards. There are many post offices around the city. Most open during business hours, with some variation. A few branches operate outside working hours, such as up to 8pm, or on Saturday mornings. The only branch that operates on Sunday is the one at the International Airport. Most hotels provide postage services for guests' letters and packages, as well as packing services.
Tipping
In Brazil, and in certain situations, tipping is mandatory and
included in the invoices of products or services. This is the case of
some restaurants (10% of total amount is added to the bill) and hotels
(10% are also added to bill). Restaurants that do not charge a service
fee often add this information on the menu. In these cases, the usual
tip is 10%.
In hotels, it is also usual to tip the bellhop (mensageiro, the
employee who takes the luggage from the taxi to reception and / or the
room) and the valet who parks your car or gets it from the parking lot.
In these cases, the amount tipped varies greatly and there is no
standard.
It is not common to tip taxi drivers. Occasionally, clients round the fare up.
ATMs
Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) can be found in many public places - some work 24 hours a day for withdrawals in reais using most well-known cards. To withdraw money with a foreign card, look for ATMs with the logos of the leading card brands, as depicted on the image beside.
