Rio+20 Calls on the Participation of the Civil Society – Briefing Note 001/2012
To enable maximum participation of the Brazilian civil society in the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), we inform that the Brazilian Government will support the initiative of the Peoples’ Summit, which will take place at Parque do Flamengo. The participation of civil society organizations in the Peoples’ Summit will take place without the onus of assembling work spaces, taking into account the organizations’ projects and the limit of resources made available by the Federal Government. For more information on this initiative, please visit the website: http://www.cupuladospovos.org.br.
For the civil society organizations that will not take part in the Peoples’ Summit, the Brazilian Government will make available, especially, the space of Warehouse #01, located at the Pier Mauá passengers terminal, in the harbor area of the city of Rio de Janeiro. Estimated price per m2 for basic booth in that venue is R$760,00 for non-profit organizations, and R$1.380,00 for profit organizations. Final prices will be informed after the results of public tendering currently in progress.
If an organization is interested in taking a space at Pier Mauá, considering the prices presented above, we request confirmation until Friday, April 13th, informing the area (in m2) and its intended use. The final distribution of the space allocated to the civil society will be made taking into consideration the available area and the requests effectively presented until the set deadline.
The official Conference spaces will be distributed as follows: Riocentro (intergovernmental conference with the participation of the Heads of State and Government), Parque dos Atletas (exhibitions by governments, international organizations, UN agencies and partners of the event), Parque do Flamengo, VivoRio and MAM (Peoples’ Summit and Socio-Environmental Arena – MDS, along with debates and live transmissions from Riocentro and from the other areas mentioned above), Galpão da Cidadania (Ministries of Culture and of Education), Quinta da Boa Vista (civil society), Arena da Barra (debates and live transmission from Riocentro and other aforementioned areas) and Pier Mauá (exhibitions on technological innovations and entrepreneurship organized by the FINEP, SEBRAE and governmental bodies, along with spaces for Brazilian and international civil society organizations). We would like to inform that the Race Circuit of Jacarepaguá will no longer be used by the Rio+20 Conference.
Lastly, we inform that the organizations interested only in conducting debates, seminars or conferences related to Rio+20 may either seek the available spaces for those activities in the city of Rio de Janeiro, or use the spaces reserved by the Brazilian Committee of Rio+20 at both Arena da Barra and VivoRio, without onus for using the area and the existing equipment. These venues must be used in a co-share basis by the interested participants. In this last case, the interested organizations may directly contact the Brazilian Committee of Rio+20 at rio20.programacao@itamaraty.gov.br.
