Brazilian companies collaborate to compensate for Rio+20’s GHG emissions

CNO Rio+20

The local GHG emissions generated at Rio+20 Conference will be offset by the “Certified Emissions Reduction” (RCEs - Reduções Certificadas de Emissão). Six Brazilian companies that participate in the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project of the Kyoto Protocol have donated sufficient RCEs (Certified Emissions Reduction) to compensate for all the local emissions generated by the consumption of combustion fuel by such fixed units as generators, by official land transportation, by electric power consumption and by residual disposal.

Air travel emissions will be compensated by the Conference participants voluntary donations, by means of an online tool dedicated to this purpose.
The companies Estre, ‘Nova Gramacho Energia Ambiental e Gás Verde’, Plantar, Rima, ‘Tractebel Energia - GDF Suez’ and Brazil’s V&M were the donors.

The use of CDM guarantees real reductions of GHG emission that can be measured and this gives transparency to the process, besides contributing to the sustainable development actions promoted by Rio+20

The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) will be in charge of administering all the funds raised in this process.
