Statement by Rio+20’s Secretary-General read by the Conference’s Spokesperson - Note 035/2012
I have the pleasure to join the host government of Brazil to announce that the negotiations reached a successful conclusion. We now have a text that will be adopted at the Conference. I would emphasize that we are very grateful to the leadership of the Brazilian government and the extensive consultation way that Brazil led the negotiations.
We believe that the text contains a lot of actions. And if these actions are implemented, and the accompanying measures are taken, they will really make a big difference in creating a positive global change.
Of course, this document is the product of intense negotiations that were many times postponed. And, therefore, it is a compromise text. Like all negotiations, there will be some countries who feel that the text could be more ambitious. Or others who feel that their own proposals could be better reflected. While others may still prefer to have it in their own language. But let's be clear: multilateral negotiations require give and take.
The spirit of compromise is the hallmark of a good consensus, and it is crucial that all countries should be on board, take ownership of it and share a collective commitment. This is the only way to go if we want to make the necessary steps to move forward together on the path of sustainable development. And personally, I am very pleased that delegations gathered here for the success of this Conference and for the future we want.
