Rio+20 in numbers


CNO Rio+20

The magnitude of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development is not only related to its political weight. The numbers show that it is one of the biggest events ever held by the UN, with wide participation by the international delegations, Heads of States and civil society representatives. Check out below the official Rio+20 numbers.

Participants:

  •  Estimated audience for all of the events: around 30 to 50 thousand;
  • Delegations from 193 countries;
  • Around 5 thousand people worked daily on the event;
  • Around 6 thousand events took place during the 9 days of the Conference.

 

Riocentro / Structure of the event

  • Total area of 571 thousand m², of which 100 thousand m² are of constructed area;
  • Parking area for 7 thousand cars;
  • 7 Km of fiber optics and 205 Km of network cables;
  • 10 Gbps Wireless Internet for up to 32.000 simultaneous users;
  • 8 Km of telephone cables;
  • More than 5.000  information and communication technology (ICT) assets;
  • Network capacity of a city with a population of 120.000 people;
  • Shared infrastructure of 600 work stations;
  • 200 desktop computers shared at the media and press center
  • Riocentro’s Pavilion 4 had 194 offices, the number of the UN’s member states;
  • Pavilion 3 played host for the press center and the side-conferences, divided among the 50 to 500 places rooms;
  • Pavilion 2 housed the food court, with 17 restaurants;
  • 161 totems (electronic information points) installed in the main hotels, airports and other points in the city with information about the event, tips about tourism in the city, transport options, the conference’s agenda , maps and other services information, all in Portuguese, English and Spanish.

 

Parque dos Atletas (Athlete’s Park)

  • Space Brazil: Brazilian Federal Government Pavilion, with 4.000 m², distributed between the central arena and the core thematic fields;
  • Exhibits from 16 Rio+20’s partner businesses, in an area of 5.484 m², and Rio de Janeiro City and State Governments, in 3.146 m²;
  • Exhibits from 15 municipalities, 21 states, 3 Judicial Branch agencies and 3 from the Legislative Branch, totaling an area of 3.500 m² of constructed area;
  • Exhibits from 57 countries, in an area of around 7.000 m² and 33 international organizations and specialized agencies, with a total area of 1.305 m².

 

HSBC Arena

  • More than 120 conferences with the attendance of 300 speakers and debaters.
  • 10 meeting rooms, video conference room and food court.
  • Wireless Internet for up to 8.000 simultaneous users

 

Pier Mauá (Maua Pier)

  • Total area used by the exhibits: 18.500 m²;
  • Warehouse 1 and adjacent area: Civil Society. Divided in many stalls of 9 up to 200 m² and had a lecture hall that could hold 100 people;
  • Warehouse 2: Ministries of Communication, Agricultural Development, Education, National Integration and Health. Sustainable Initiatives and technological innovations’ exhibits in this sector, with a 3.500 m² area;
  • Warehouse 3 and the adjacent area: Finep (Studies and Projects Financial Supporter). Sustainable Initiatives and technological innovations’ exhibits in this sector, with a 5.250 m² area;
  • Warehouse 4 and the adjacent area: MCTI. Technological innovations’ exhibits, with an area of 5.250 m².

Transportation to Riocentro

  •  Around 350 buses specific to the transportation of the participants with credentials;
  • 7 bus lines connecting the City Center, the South and Barra da Tijuca to Riocentro;
  • 2 bus lines connecting the International and National airports to the hotels.

 

Volunteers

  • 1.500 young people, selected between students from SENAI/FIRJAN’s technical courses, Rio de Janeiro’s public school students, universities and professionals from all over the country;

  • Around 700 young people from vulnerable communities were selected;

  • 5% of the volunteer force was comprised by people with disabilities;

    Hotels

    • According to the Brazilian Hotel Industry Association in Rio (ABIH-RJ), the occupation level of the hotels during the event was 95%.
