Rio+20 unveils the Amazon forest
The biodiversity of the Amazon forest is on display at the "Amazônia Desconhecida" (Unknown Amazon forest) in the Science, Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Development Space (Píer Mauá’s Warehouse 4). The exhibition was organized by the Emílio Goeldi Museum of the State of Pará.
The exhibition’s 4 panels reveal the Biodiversity Census’ initiative which catalogued the rich biological diversity of the region. In addition, they provide information about endangered species and the key research areas in all biomes in Brazil. The visitors can learn further with the help of electronic games, spelling books, educational kits and videos available at the exhibition.
Among the highlights of the exhibition is the research on the ‘pau-cravo’ (Dicypellium caryophyllaceum), which is considered an extinct species and that was once used as a drug in Brazil’s outback (sertão) during the colonial period. Admission is free of charge.
