In the early afternoon of Thursday, June 21, the governor of the State of Amapá, Camilo Capiberibe, gave the ‘Letter from the Brazilian Amazon"  to Rio +20’s executive-director, Brice Lalonde, and the Minister of Institutional Relations, Ideli Salvatti during the meeting "Building Together the Sustainable Development of the Amazon," held at Riocentro. The document, which contains 456 propositions, articles and demands, is the result of a joint effort between the governments of the nine member states of the Legal Amazon.

'I will deliver this letter to the UN member countries, and certainly, it will be disseminated throughout the world. It represents the voice of the Amazon," said Lalonde.

Almir Suruí, representative of indigenous peoples, congratulated the governors through the letter, which, he says, is "a great deal for Amazon, which shows the world how you can appreciate our culture and our forest while it stands. With this, we will be able to build a more sustainable and fairer world," he concluded.

Besides the preservation of the Amazon, the social inclusion and environmental education with a focus on children have also been topics of the debates.

The minister Ideli Salvatti said that the document is of paramount importance for the inclusion of the Brazilian Amazon in major environmental agendas. "All the points that are contained in this letter are critical for us to fight for dignity and the inclusion of people living in the Amazon forest."

At the end of the discussions, the representative of the Secretariat of Environment and Sustainable Development of the Amazonas State, Nadia Ferreira, and the president of Ocean Futures Society, Jean-Michel Cousteau, signed a document in which they commit themselves to addressing the issue of environmental education in an integrated manner.

The event was also attended by the head of federal affairs of the Presidency, Olavo Noleto, the doctor Roberto Vicentini, from the ‘Chico Mendes Institute’, the Governor of the States of Roraima, José Anchieta Júnior and Rondônia, Confucius Moura, the vice-governor of the State of Mato Grosso, Chico Daltro, the president of Ocean Futures Society in Brazil, Leda Bozaciyan, Members of Parliament, Senators and representatives of civil society organizations.
